Drugs of Abuse
The illegal use and abuse of both powder and crack cocaine continue to be a problem in San Diego. Both drugs remain readily available in the city and surrounding areas. Another major drug of abuse in the area is heroin. Most of the heroin found in San Diego currently comes from Mexico. This includes both brown powder heroin and black tar heroin. Marijuana also continues to be a major problem in the city of San Diego and is and has been the most available and most widely abused drug in the area.
Another major drug of abuse in San Diego is methamphetamine. There is an increase in both the manufacturing of this drug as well as the possession and use of the drug. Club drugs such as MDMA, GHB and Ketamine (“Special K”) are also still being used in the rave/club scene in the area with the younger population.
Recently, there has also been a rise in prescription drug abuse and addiction. The prescription drugs of choice in San Diego are Loritab, Vicoden and Vicoprofen.
Drug Related Crime
There were 7,430 adult misdemeanor arrests for drug offenses in San Diego in 2003 and there were also 5,594 adult felony drug arrests during 2003. There were also an additional 192 juvenile drug arrests in San Diego during 2003.
Of the adult male and female arrestees in San Diego, 10.3% of males and 15.2% of females tested positive for cocaine at the time of their arrest while 41.7% of males and 29.1% of females tested positive for marijuana. There were also 36.2% of males and 47.1% of females that tested positive for methamphetamine at the time of their arrest and 5.1% of males and 8.7% of females that tested positive for heroin. In fact, off all adult arrestees in 2003 in San Diego, 67% of adult male arrestees and 69% of female arrestees tested positive for drugs.
In addition, the San Diego arrestee data for 2003 indicates that 51.5% of adult male arrestees reported using marijuana within the past year. Among the male arrestees reporting past year marijuana use, the average number of days the substance was used in the past month was 9.1 days. This is according to the Office of the National Drug Control Policy (ONDCP).
