Drugs of Abuse
Marijuana
Marijuana is one of the most widely abused drugs in the city of Sacramento. Currently Mexican marijuana is widely available and is the least expensive type of marijuana found in the area.
Methamphetamine
The primary drug that is a threat to the city of Sacramento is methamphetamine. Both crystal methamphetamine and the purer, more smokeable form of this drug, (“ice”) are major problems in the Sacramento area. Currently, the production, importation, and use of this drug are all increasing in the area. According to the Office of the National Drug Control Policy (ONDCP), there were 36 methamphetamine labs seized in Sacramento County during 1999.
Club Drugs
Currently club drugs such as ecstasy, gamma hydroxybutyrate (GHB) and steroids are rising in abuse and are most available through rave clubs and dance festivals in the city of Sacramento and surrounding areas.
Crime and Drug Related Crime
According to data for 2003, approximately 79% of adult male arrestees in Sacramento tested positive for illicit drugs at the time of arrest. The drugs of abuse included cocaine, marijuana, methamphetamine, opiates and PCP. Of those Sacramento arrestees, 55% admitted to using marijuana in the past year. The average number of days per month that the arrestees reported the use of marijuana was 9.7 days per month.
Of the arrestees in Sacramento, 16.9% reported receiving outpatient treatment at some point in their lives and 24.5% reported receiving inpatient treatment. From the years 1997 to 2002, there were 31,156 admissions to treatment in the city of Sacramento.
Programs/Initiatives
In the year 2002, the city of Sacramento partnered with Demand Treatment! This organization is part of an organization called Join Together, which provides Sacramento County with technical assistance, funding, and leadership development to help meet the treatment goals of the community.
Sacramento also started its first community-wide anti-drug coalition, Project Help. This coalition is dedicated to creating a drug-free and alcohol-safe community. Project Help works to unite the community in drug prevention as well as enforcement and treatment. Another of its goals is to educate the Sacramento community about substance abuse and its dangers, increase the safety of citizens by reducing alcohol and other drug abuse and their related crimes and violence. Project Help also works to improve coordination among public and private entities to address substance abuse in Sacramento County.
