Cocaine
Powder cocaine is still a major threat in the city of Miami. The use of powder and crack cocaine is on the rise with new users currently.
Heroin
Currently the prices of heroin in the city of Miami have dropped due to the increase of use of drugs such as oxycodone and hydrocodeone. Heroin, however, is still widely available in the city of Miami and is still a major drug of abuse in the area.
Marijuana
Marijuana is still considered widely available in the area and prices vary depending on potency.
Methamphetamine
According to the Office of the National Drug Control Policy (ONDCP), methamphetamine use continues to increase in Miami, with use spreading from the gay male and techno-dance scenes to females and heterosexual males. There has also been an increase in the high purity smokable form of meth called ice.
Club Drugs
GHB (gamma hydroxybutyrate) is a commonly abused drug in Miami and all of South Florida but the abuse of another popular club drug, MDMA, seems to be declining. According to ONDCP, some club drug users are using powder cocaine to bolster the effects of the club drugs.
Other Drugs of Abuse
There has been a rise in methodone abuse in the city of Miami as well and OxyContin abuse and addiction is still increasing. However, many addicts are having a hard time purchasing OxyContin because fewer doctors are prescribing it. Many OxyContin abusers have since switched to methadone.
Crime & Drug-Related Crime
In 2003, there were 6,362 drug arrests in the city of Miami. In 2004, this statistic rose as there were 8,290 drug arrests in Miami. From January to June 2005, the Miami Police Department made 3,897 arrests for drug offenses.
Of the drug arrests made in 2003, approximately 63% of Miami adult male arrestees that were drug tested, tested positive for one of the following drugs at arrest: cocaine, marijuana, methamphetamine, opiates, or PCP. Of those, 16.7% of arrestees interviewed reported that they received residential or inpatient drug treatment at some point in their lives.
