Maryland Drug and Alcohol Rehab Information
Drug abuse and treatment is, unfortunately, and has become a part of our culture to a point where the average person is either related to or knows someone who needs help. There are many different things that factor into making a decision that could save the life of someone you love. Here at Addiction Help Services we understand, and we have experienced and trained professionals to help you find the correct place. You can reach us at 1-877-575-8307 or writing an email to info@addictionhelpservices.net Did you know? In 2003 there were 5,967 juveniles admitted to rehab in Maryland. Of these, 5,315 used pot, 3,972 used alcohol, 403 used cocaine/crack, and 309 used heroin. Obviously these numbers are not the sum of the total admitted because each admission may have up to 3 substances associated with it. That same year showed a total of 73,779 admitted. Adults on the list were made up as follows: heroin 27,191, alcohol 38,328, crack/cocaine 29,010, and marijuana 17,784. Again these numbers reflect an admission which can have up to 3 drugs each. This data is according to the CESAR (Center for Substance Abuse Research) at the University of Maryland. A separate report called Outlooks and Outcomes 2004 Annual Report, showed that 58% of all admissions to treatment programs funded by the Maryland Alcohol and Drug Abuse Administration were for alcohol. Cocaine made up 46%, heroin 38%, and marijuana 36%. This obviously shows most admissions were combining narcotics and alcohol. There were 5,136 treatment slots in 1996 in Baltimore. By 2005 there was an increase of 62% to 8,295. Drug abuse also breeds crime. When people are on drugs they do whatever they feel they have to in order to survive. The behavior of an addict is unpredictable and usually geared toward finding and obtaining drugs. In 2006 alone there were 53,047 arrests related to drugs in Maryland. That same year the District of Columbia reported that 40% of all drug related arrests tested positive for cocaine this also according to CESAR. There is also a very deadly side to addiction. In 2002 the total number of overdose deaths was 605, 317. Another problem is for example some peoples ideas for solutions. Take for instance methadone, the “answer” to heroin. Even though it is also a drug, it is given to addicts as a substitute to control cravings and help the addict “manage” their addiction. Methadone deaths increased from 141 in 2005 to 179 in 2006, a 25% increase. The majority was death by a lethal dose (59%), followed by using methadone with other drugs (41%). In 1998 there were only 24 deaths total due to methadone in Maryland, it has increased every year but 1 since. The need for help in Maryland is very apparent when a poll in 2004 showed that 44% of all high school seniors in the state said they had used alcohol, 22% had smoked marijuana, and 5% had used cocaine or amphetamines. |
